View More03/01/2017 I am in the repair end of the mower business and not the lawn mowing part of it. Just in my experience I find 5W-30 in lawn mowers just tend to use more oil. You wouldn't do any harm by using the 5W-30 and find any of the dealer I have worked for all use it in new and older mowers.
View More5w 30 will work. It is really too light, and you should use 30 wt. 5w30 maintains its viscosity over extreme temperature changes. When its hot, 5w30 will get too thin to properly lubricate your lawn mower.
View More01/04/2009 They said the engine in my JD as a "proprietary engine built to JD specks and I should use the 10W-40." I do use the 10W-40 but I use a full synthetic. If the engine is clearly marked as BS in whatever equipment you have, I think the 5W-30, full synthetic, Valvoline MaxLife would be a great oil because of the high HTHS and high 100C cSt.
